4AD Records (1980–2000s)

Vaughan Oliver and his studio 23 Envelope developed a visual language for 4AD that was unlike anything else in music packaging. Distressed photographic textures, etched line drawings, gothic romanticism, and dreamlike collage — the aesthetic of Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, and Pixies. Ambiguous, beautiful, slightly threatening, and entirely resistant to easy explanation.
