Factory Records / Haçienda (1978–1992)

Peter Saville's design for Factory Records established an aesthetic of elegant austerity: fine grid systems, restrained serif and sans-serif dialogue, and a deliberate quality of cool remove. Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures cover, New Order's Power Corruption and Lies — the graphic language of post-industrial Manchester rendered with Bauhaus precision and romantic melancholy. Beautiful, cold, and completely serious.
