East German DEFA Film Poster (1950s–1989)

The state film studio's poster tradition occupied a unique space between Soviet Socialist Realism and Western European graphic design. Painterly figurative illustration, rich chromatic colour, and a humanistic sensibility that Soviet propaganda often lacked. The best examples are quietly strange — a socialism that made room for melancholy, romance, and complexity.
