Taisho Modern / Japanese 1920s (1912–1926)
The Taisho period saw Western modernism collide productively with Japanese graphic traditions. Art Deco geometry and the moga/mobo (modern girl/modern boy) glamour imagery appear alongside ukiyo-e compositional principles and kaisho calligraphy. Department store posters and magazine covers developed a hybrid visual language — neither Western nor traditionally Japanese, but confidently both at once.
