Pre-Raphaelite Illustration (1848–1900)

The Brotherhood's rejection of academic painting convention in favour of medieval narrative, intense colour, and painstaking natural detail created a distinctive illustrative tradition. Millais, Rossetti, Burne-Jones — richly detailed scenes of Arthurian romance and Shakespearean tragedy, jewel-toned colour, intricate foliage and textile detail, and idealised figures in states of profound feeling. Beauty as the highest moral category.
