Madhubani / Indian Folk Art (Traditional–present)

From the Mithila region of Bihar, Madhubani painting uses heavy black outlines to contain intricate geometric fill patterns within all forms. Fish, birds, the sun and moon, peacocks, and mythological scenes from the Ramayana are depicted through pattern rather than naturalistic shading. Every surface is filled — negative space is pattern, positive space is denser pattern. A warm earthy palette punctuated by vivid local colour.
