Etching / Engraving (16th century–present)
From Dürer to Piranesi to Hogarth, the intaglio tradition produces imagery through dense systems of cross-hatched and parallel lines incised into metal. Tonal gradients emerge entirely from mark density; shadow is accumulated line; the line itself has a specific scratchy precision no brush or digital tool replicates. Intimate in scale, extraordinarily detailed, and quietly authoritative.
